This has become one of my favorite paintings to date. I’ve always loved painting animals, and what’s not to love about the majesty of a giant lion?
Like so many others, I grew up reading and watching The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis. I remember falling in love with Aslan and imagining what it would be like to bury my hands in his great, soft mane. That sense of strength, courage, and comfort stayed with me, and I began this painting with Aslan very much in mind.
As I worked, however, our church began a study on spiritual warfare. I was surprised to realize how often Satan is compared to a roaring lion in Scripture, and I found myself conflicted. That was not the message I wanted this painting to convey. Then one Sunday, our pastor pointed us to Book of Revelation 5:5, where Christ is revealed as the Lion of the tribe of Judah. In that moment, my excitement returned. The lion once again represented the victory, authority, and majesty I had hoped to capture from the very beginning.
Over the past two years, I have also spent countless hours studying Vincent van Gogh alongside my students. His expressive brushwork, rich texture, and dynamic movement through line and color have deeply influenced my own approach to painting. You can see traces of that inspiration woven throughout this piece.
My hope is that this painting does more than decorate a wall. I hope it reminds viewers of the strength, courage, and hope found in the Lion of Judah, while inviting them to pause and experience the movement, texture, and emotion that first inspired me to put brush to canvas.
